How Would You Describe the Lean Six Sigma Process?
What makes Lean Six Sigma the best and the highest form of business process development and improvement? What types of things do you learn in the Lean Six Sigma process that you wouldn’t be able to learn with any other type of business process methodology?
The Lean Process
In understanding that, we must first need to define and to look deep into what makes it Lean Six Sigma. The practice of Lean is the minimization of waste; meaning, its goal is to make sure that the wastes involved in a business process are less and that it’s maximized in a business process.
Out of the different types of waste, the goal of Lean is to make sure that the waste is minimal and that it’s not conspiring to make the business processes worse. The eight (8) different types of waste are:
- Overproduction
- Inventory
- Unused employee skills and creativity
- Long waiting times
- Transportation
- Motion
- Overprocessing
- Defects
The Six Sigma Process
If Lean is focused on waste management, Six Sigma is focused on making sure that the defects are minimal and that the business process is at its best and the most maximized. Whether you’re in whatever department or business industry, you’ll be able to make use of the Six Sigma process for the improvement and the overall development of your business processes.
Lean Six Sigma Process
So how would we describe the Lean Six Sigma process? Simple — it’s a process in which the main goal is to minimize the wastes involved as well as the defects in the process. In order for you to know it better, let’s give an example.
Let’s say that you are a company that’s making automobiles. Your daily goal is to be able to produce 1,000 car bodies before 4 in the afternoon. However, with the pace you are in now, you’re making somewhere around 800 at 4 in the afternoon, and you reach the 1,000th part at around 7 P.M.
How would you be able to solve it using the Lean Six Sigma process? What steps and strategies would be involved? When you work with us here at Maximum Potential, you can expect that we’ll be direct with whatever we need from you and how you can get what you need from us.
The DMAIC Approach
One of the more famous methodologies and strategies used in Lean Six Sigma is the DMAIC method or the (D) – Define; (M) – Measure; (A) – Analyze; (I) – Improve; and (C) – Control. This strategy is what’s used in order to improve or to develop a currently existing business process.
Define is the phase where a certain company or business would try and dictate what the problem is – how it can be addressed. The measure is the part where the company would measure the performance of the process. Analyze would be the part where the root cause would be addressed and looked at; while improvement is the phase that would eliminate the root of the problem, and control is the part where the company would improve the performance of processes and future processes.
In the given example and situation above, the DMAIC approach would:
- Find out why it’s not reaching the target amount of parts produced within the timeframe
- Be able to solve the problems from its root cause
- Improve and even exceed the targeted amount of products
By doing the DMAIC approach, we, at Maximum Potential, would be able to solve all the business problems that you have without ever requiring you to spend tens of thousands of dollars for it. Through the Lean Six Sigma Process, everything you need as regards business process improvement and development would be given to you.
