What are the 8 Wastes of Lean Six Sigma?

Let’s not go in circles, the eight (8) different wastes of Lean Six Sigma include:

1. Excess Processing or Overprocessing – This type of waste wastes energy and money, and is the common result of work that needs to be tweaked or eradicated because there’s an existing process better than it.
2. Waiting Times – This is the waste in which the time spent waiting on the next step of the business process. It could be waiting for employees and workers, machines, raw materials, and other processes.
3. Transportation – Transportation waste is defined as the time wasted; or for the journey wasted which can translate to wasted costs and money for the moving of people, materials, and even equipment.
4. Motion – This waste is for the time and effort wasted by people in performing unnecessary and inessential actions and processes.
5. Defects – Defects, from its term alone, you already know is not going to be helpful for a company. Defects are the waste that failed to meet the requirements or the standards set by a company for processes, services, or products.
6. Inventory – Inventory waste is the type of waste that has been a product of overprocessing or overproduction; these are the materials, products, and/or services that cannot be utilized and used by the company or the business.
7. Overproduction – Sound familiar to you? Overproduction is the type of waste in which a company or a business produces more than the demand of the customers and the market.
8. Non-Utilized Employee Skills and Talents – Probably the most common type of waste is the unused or non-utilized talents or skills. This waste is the result of undermining the skills and the capabilities of workers and professionals.
